I’m gonna tell you a little story about the simple change to my diet that lead me down a road to incredible improvements in my health and well being.
At the beginning of 2017, I was diagnosed with Lupus (SLE), which is an autoimmune disease that affects the joints and some other body functions. The main symptoms are: achy joints, extreme fatigue, skin rash, pain when breathing deep, eye dryness, kidney problems and so on. Luckily for me, we caught mine early on and I mostly only experienced the achy/painful joints and extreme tiredness.
I knew there was a problem when my hands hurt so bad that I couldn’t grasp my toothbrush to brush my teeth in the morning.
After, many visits to the rheumatologist and repeat blood tests I was finally placed on a medicine that helped my symptoms immensely. The only issue was that I did not want to be bound to a medicine my whole life.
Before then, I had been a vegetarian for 6 years and a vegan following that for 1 year.
There have been a lot of studies coming out that relate autoimmune diseases to nutrition issues. I firmly believe that my eating habits for 7 years- leaving meat out, led to my disease.
My goal is to fix that.
In January 2018, I did a SECA scan at my gym to see what my body fat percentage was and see where my muscle mass was. I didn’t know at the time, but it measured so much more than that. The biggest take away at the time for me was the phase angle. The phase angle is a measure of cellular health. When I did the scan in January 2018 my phase angle was in the 34th percentile.
I most recently re-did the scan in May 2019, after over a year of re-introducing meat back in to my diet. My phase angle cell health improved by over 50% placing me in the 87th percentile.
I firmly believe that the meat changed my health. However, I don’t just eat any meat. I make sure that more times than not I am eating grass fed/grass finished beef, organic pork and chicken, and wild caught seafood.
